This January, we held our annual first years’ English speech contest.
This year, students were asked to write about their interests.　　Some of them chose to write about art, some about music, reading, food, travel, et cetera.
It’s my hope that someday they have the opportunity to use the language they practiced to help them make new friends in other countries or here in Japan.
For our judges, choosing a winner this year was especially difficult as they had a number of well-performed speeches to choose from.
Over the years, I’ve noticed an improvement in our participants’ English pronunciation.　　I think it’s testament to the hard work currently being done in elementary schools in Japan.
In the future, as English becomes a more integral part of Japanese culture, I expect these kinds of contests to become even more entertaining and rewarding.

1月11日（土）に中学1年生英語スピーチコンテストを開催しました。
今年度の生徒たちは絵画、音楽、読書、食べ物、旅行等、自分の興味あることについて書きました。
将来、生徒たちが勉強した英語を使って、海外や国内で新しい友人を作る機会があればよいと願っています。
とても上手なスピーチがたくさんあって、審査員は優勝者を決めるのにとても苦労しました。
この数年で、参加者の英語の発音がとても上達していると思います。それは日本の小学校で現在行われている熱心な指導の証だと思います。将来、英語が日本文化においてより重要になるにつれて、このようなコンテストがさらにおもしろく、価値のあるものになることを期待します。
